David Jean Padberg, 73, of the Laguna Vista and South Padre Island community, passed away on October 8, 2026, in Pharr, Texas. He was born on September 2, 1953, in Centralia, Illinois, to James August Padberg and Ruth Irene Tober.
A hardworking and independent man, David was a former employee of Laguna Vista and a businessman who proudly owned and operated his own dirt-moving business on South Padre Island. He was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and spending time with his beloved dog, Buck. His other favorite pastimes included playing dominoes, reading, writing, and listening to music.
David's love for fishing and the outdoors was matched by his dedication to his community. He was a sports journalist, fishing and golf radio show personality, and served as a master of ceremonies and host of the annual Shallow Sport Owners Tournament for more than 15 years. He developed countless friendships through these activities and treasured the connections he made along the way. His friendships extended throughout Laguna Vista, the Laguna Vista Fire Station, and the South Padre Island Golf Club. His warmth, humor, and generous spirit made him a valued part of the places he called home.
David is survived by his daughter, Germaine Irene Padberg; his granddaughter, Julia Flora Ludlow; and many dear friends and neighbors who became like family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Irene Tober; his father, James August Padberg; and his older brother, Jim.
David will be remembered for his stories, his humor, his love for those around him, and the many friendships he built over the years. His presence in the community and the memories he shared will be deeply missed.
